The program supported by Coordination Togolaise des Organisations Paysannes (CTOP Togo), aired on Radio Horizon in the local language (Ewe), sparked crucial discussions on the challenges, opportunities, and various perspectives of economically empowering women in Togo in the face of climate change.
The Togolese Coordination of Peasant and Agricultural Producers Organizations (CTOP) and its Women’s College aim to promote professional, competitive, dynamic, and sustainable agriculture, with a focus on women’s economic empowerment.
Economic empowerment of women, defined as the acquisition of the capacity to make economic decisions and control resources, is hindered by various obstacles such as gender discrimination and limited access to education, economic resources, and markets. To overcome these obstacles, recommendations include the establishment of laws to ensure equality, support for girls’ education, promotion of financial inclusion, strengthening of women’s entrepreneurship, and increased participation of women in decision-making.
Women can play a crucial role in combating climate change by holding leadership positions, raising awareness in communities, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and contributing to community resilience to climate impacts. Key resources for sustainable economic empowerment of women include access to land, water, financial services, education, information technologies, and laws protecting their land rights.
Recommendations for government and civil society organizations include developing laws favorable to women, supporting women’s education and entrepreneurship, promoting financial inclusion, and raising awareness against gender stereotypes. These actions aim to create an enabling environment for sustainable economic empowerment of women in the context.
