Rural Radio: Voices for Change

Rural Radio: Voices for Change

Start a dialogue!

As decision-makers gather at the Global Family Farming Forum at FAO Headquarters in Rome from 15-17 October 2024, FAO and Farm Radio International will be broadcasting live, in collaboration with radio broadcasters from around the world, to showcase the power of rural radio. As part of the World Food Forum, this event marks the mid-term implementation of the UN Decade of Family Farming and celebrates the vital role family farmers play in building sustainable food systems.

As you know, rural radio provides vital communication services in rural areas, offering accessible information to family farmers and communities, with programmes crafted to meet specific knowledge and information needs. In line with this, the Forum will feature a model rural radio station that will generate rich content, including interviews, panel discussions, and cultural segments. These will cover key topics such as public policies, innovation, market opportunities and the role of women and youth in family farming.

Leading the English- and French-language broadcasts will be several members of Farm Radio International’s radio network in Africa.

Radio stations are encouraged to re-broadcast the programming from Rome, available in English, French, and Spanish and accessible via a live streaming channel and on-demand audio files, which will soon be available on the FAO ComDev website: https://www.fao.org/communication-for-development/en/. Broadcasters are encouraged to use these materials as a primary source of information to create programmes in local languages, adapting the discussions to the unique context of their listeners and communities. The audio files will be available for download through this link: bit.ly/GFFFRuralRadio.

This content, available in English, French, and Spanish, will be made accessible through a live streaming channel and on-demand audio files, which will soon be made available at the FAO ComDev website: https://www.fao.org/communication-for-development/en/. We therefore strongly encourage you to use these materials and primary source of information to create your own programmes in local languages, enabling you to adapt the discussions to the unique context of your listeners and communities. By collaborating with broadcasters like you, we aim to amplify the voices of family farmers, youth, women, and indigenous communities, ensuring these critical conversations reach rural areas where radio remains a key source of information. Your station’s involvement will help bring these important stories to a wider audience, fostering meaningful dialogue on family farming and sustainable food systems.

We look forward to your participation in this initiative, and together, we can make a lasting impact.
