International Day of Rural Women is observed on October 15 every year to recognize their vital role in food systems and rural development. From the production of crops to the processing, preparation and distribution of food, women’s work paid and unpaid feeds their families, communities and the world. However, they do not exercise equal power with men, and therefore earn less income and experience higher food insecurity.
To mark and celebrate International Day of Rural Women, Farm Radio International shared a theme pack of radio resources all about rural women, their successes and challenges. This pack includes ten items: two backgrounders, two interview scripts, one drama, and five Barza Wire stories.
Backgrounders
Gender inequalities in land rights in Africa
Interviews
Improving women’s access to farmland in northern Ghana
From period poverty to period parity: Keeping girls safe and happy
Dramas
Women farmers of Adiepena learn about registering land in Ghana
Barza Wire stories
Ghana: Women work as spray painters to support their families
Côte d’Ivoire: Women cocoa producers lead the battle for access to land
Côte d’Ivoire: Women gain access to credit through village savings and credit associations (VSLAs)
Ghana: Women farmers benefit from trainings that target women only
We hope that this kind of “one-stop shop” on selected topics is useful, and that radio stations can use the resources in this month’s theme pack to make effective programming on rural women.
