Under the Yenkasa Africa rural radio initiative, Radio Maisha, in collaboration with the Kenya National Farmers Federation (KENAFF) and Sigor Youth Vision Group from Bomet County, aired a Kiswahili-language program titled Kenyan youth involvement in agriculture. This episode aimed to shed light on the role of young people in transforming agriculture into a sustainable and profitable sector despite the challenges they face.
The program emphasized opportunities available for young people, discussed innovative approaches to overcoming common barriers and showcased youth-led initiatives driving change in their communities. The guests included Leornard, a communication champion and Assistant Secretary in charge of marketing and communications at Sigor Youth Vision Group, and Arthur Muiruri, the President of the Kenya Agricultural Students Association (KASA) and a champion for youth engagement in agriculture and food systems.
The discussions were rich with insights into the evolving role of youth in agriculture, exploring how young people are adopting innovative methods, receiving mentorship, and leveraging training opportunities to establish rewarding careers in the sector. They also addressed key challenges, such as limited access to resources, and offered practical solutions to enhance youth participation in agriculture.
