Family farmers produce 80 per cent of the world’s food in value terms, meaning that a good portion of the food you eat daily probably comes from a family farm. As well as contributing to food security and nutrition worldwide, family farmers also manage natural resources, innovate in the face of climate events, ensure the cohesion of rural communities and preserve cultural heritage.
But family farming has greater potential still. With stronger support through public policies and investments, more could be done. The United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019–28 (UNDFF) provides a framework to develop, improve and implement public policies and investments supporting family farming. Since its launch in 2019, it has facilitated the adoption of policies in countries worldwide, increasingly brought governments into the conversation on family farming, and raised commitments supporting family farming globally.
Global Family Farming Forum
Marking five years of implementation, the United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019–28 (UNDFF) is set to host its Global Family Farming Forum (15–18 October 2024) this October. Co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Forum will celebrate family farming as the backbone of diverse, innovative and dynamic agrifood systems, identify policy innovations that support family farming and showcase examples of successful experiences from all over the world. It will also review results and identify priority policy and technical areas shaping the UNDFF agenda for the next five years. The Forum will be held the same week as the World Food Forum (WFF) 2024.
With more than 200 participants expected, the Global Family Farming Forum will provide a platform for exchange on family farming and create links to the discussions on investment, science and innovation and youth being held at the WFF, additionally contributing to the outcomes of the WFF with the meaningful participation of family farmers, ministers, parliamentarians, researchers and other actors involved in the UNDFF’s national and intergovernmental coordination.
