Start a dialogue!

The future of Togo’s agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors hinges on the active involvement of its youth. This was the resounding message from two insightful radio programs broadcast in Togo’s local languages, Tem and Ewé, on Radio Tchaoudjo and Radio La Prix, respectively, both produced by Coordination Togolaise des Organisations Paysannes (CTOP).

The programs delved into the immense potential of these sectors for driving economic growth, ensuring food security, creating jobs, and fostering rural development. They also highlighted the challenges young people face in entering and thriving within these fields.

Renowned experts, including Mr. SALAMI-ODJO Mouftao, National President of REJEPPAT, and Mrs. AMADOU BARKA, Treasurer of REJEPPAT, shared their perspectives on Radio Tchaoudjo. They emphasized the abundance of opportunities in modern agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and sustainable resource management. However, they also acknowledged the hurdles, such as limited access to land, inadequate training, financing constraints, and the impacts of climate change.

To overcome these challenges, the experts proposed a multifaceted approach, including land reforms, enhanced training programs, increased financial support, improved infrastructure, and the adoption of sustainable practices. They stressed the importance of collaboration between the government, organizations, and young people themselves.

The programs offered practical advice to inspire young people to embrace agriculture as a viable career path. Key recommendations included acquiring technical skills, continuous learning, financial planning, innovation, environmental stewardship, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. The importance of networking, resilience, and leadership was also emphasized.

On Radio La Prix, Madame KUDITE Abrayo Kafui and Monsieur Afantchawo KOUDASSE provided a complementary view of the sector. They highlighted the government’s and farmer organizations’ efforts to support young agricultural entrepreneurs. The speakers also addressed the challenges and outlined solutions, including subsidies, equipment, agricultural inputs, and credit facilities.

Both programs underscored the critical role of youth in transforming Togo’s agricultural landscape. By harnessing their energy, skills, and innovative ideas, the country can achieve food self-sufficiency, create sustainable livelihoods, and build a resilient future.

These radio programs offer valuable insights for young people considering a career in agriculture, forestry, or fisheries. We encourage listeners to tune in to the recordings of both programs to gain a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities and challenges in these vital sectors.
