In Zimbabwe, David Bakasa is transforming radio engagement by blending traditional broadcasting with digital platforms like Facebook Live, WhatsApp, and podcasts. Mr. Bakasa is the radio programming manager at ZimGospel Masters Radio, where he is committed to making radio more interactive and inclusive, connecting with audiences both locally and globally through dynamic online conversations and listener participation.
Mr. Bakasa’s radio journey began in 2017 when he volunteered as a journalist for a community station in Zimbabwe’s West Province. Driven by his passion for amplifying voices, he advanced his career by hosting Community in Focus and later contributing as a magazine writer. In 2021, when ZimGospel Masters Radio secured its webcast license, he transitioned into a producer and presenter role, hosting news programs and coordinating sessions. Through his work, Mr. Bakasa has provided listeners with a platform to voice concerns on critical issues such as human rights and climate change.
By integrating digital media tools such as a WhatsApp line, Facebook Live comments, and call-in programs, Mr. Bakasa creates an interactive platform for his listeners. They can ask questions, share personal stories, and suggest topics or guests for future programs. He says, “The audience poses questions based on the day’s topic and focus.” This direct engagement allows Mr. Bakasa and ZimGospel Masters Radio to address relevant issues, respond to listener needs, and build a stronger, more engaged audience.
Mr. Bakasa not only engages directly with his audience but also ensures his broadcasts remain accessible through the Zeno Radio app. This platform allows listeners to access past episodes anytime, reaching a wider audience beyond Zimbabwe. His programs have attracted more than 60,000 listeners worldwide.
Mr. Bakasa is committed to empowering communities through radio by tackling critical issues such as gender-based violence, human rights, and climate change. He says, “My passion has always been to be a voice for the voiceless and bring meaningful conversations to the forefront.” Through his broadcasts, he creates a sense of community, amplifies underrepresented voices, and ensures that important topics reach a wide audience.
In addition to engaging listeners digitally, Mr. Bakasa creates space for in-person community dialogue. He has hosted several discussions on key issues such as climate change migration and adaptation, food security through agriculture, and gender-based violence prevention.
Recently, he traveled to Seke Rural East, Zimbabwe, to discuss environmental and agricultural sustainability. By facilitating these face-to-face conversations, he helps communities share their struggles, personal experiences, and solutions, fostering stronger connections among community members.
Mr. Bakasa attributes his success in radio to his determination and deep passion for the craft. As the daily radio programs manager, he oversees shifts, curates content, develops program ideas, and edits the online news desk. He ensures each broadcast is informative and impactful, keeping listeners engaged and informed.
Mr. Bakasa uses radio to bridge the gap between distant communities, creating a space where people can share perspectives, personal stories, and ideas. He says, “My goal is to make sure the issues affecting people are addressed by the relevant stakeholders—those who can truly make a difference.”Whether it’s a WhatsApp message from a rural farmer or a Facebook comment from an urban youth, Mr. Bakasa ensures that every voice is heard.
By blending his passion for storytelling with social media, Mr. Bakasa has transformed ZimGospel Masters Radio into a hub for education, advocacy, and global connection. His innovative approach highlights the power of digital platforms to expand radio’s reach and foster meaningful listener engagement. Moving forward, he plans to deepen community connections and use his platform to inspire positive change and build new online communities.
