Brian Augustus Kanyenda’s career in radio broadcasting is driven by a passion for social change and the belief in radio’s power to amplify marginalized voices. Inspired by broadcasters from a young age, Mr. Kanyenda was motivated to use his platform to advocate for vulnerable groups, particularly women and children. Over time, he has refined his skills in radio programming, content creation, and community engagement, always aiming to spark conversations and inspire positive change.

Mr. Kanyenda currently hosts and produces two popular programs on CAN Radio: Liu La Mlimi (Farmers’ Voice) and Chindunji Pa Chilengedwe (Focus on Environment). These programs empower rural communities with valuable knowledge on sustainable agriculture, eco-friendly farming practices, and gender equality in agriculture. By featuring expert insights and sharing success stories, Mr. Kanyenda helps farmers, particularly in areas like Lilongwe, navigate challenges related to climate change, including unpredictable rainfall and droughts.

A key challenge in Mr. Kanyenda’s region is the adverse impact of climate change on farming. Unpredictable weather patterns have led to poor crop yields, affecting farmers’ livelihoods, especially for women and children. Through his programs, Mr. Kanyenda raises awareness about sustainable farming practices and environmental conservation. He has partnered with organizations like EcoGen to introduce biogas systems for cooking and fertilizer production, which economically empower women and help reduce deforestation. Success stories from farmers who have adopted new methods, such as those in Dzalanyama Forest using biogas, illustrate the positive impact of his work.

Mr. Kanyenda’s programs have received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with listeners participating in phone-ins and forming local clubs to discuss the topics raised. His commitment to inclusivity is evident in his on-air interactions with listeners, live shows, and field visits. These efforts create a sense of community and strengthen the connection between Mr. Kanyenda and his audience.

As a member of Farm Radio’s network, Mr. Kanyenda has received valuable training and resources, enhancing his broadcasting skills and supporting his work in social change. His programs continue to inspire, inform, and empower listeners, demonstrating radio’s potential as a tool for positive change in rural communities.
