Climate change has numerous effects on the global environment, human health, and the economy. These include increased frequency and severity of natural disasters, loss of biodiversity, deforestation and land degradation, disruption of food chains and ecosystems, increased risks of water-borne diseases, and others. Many of your communities are feeling these effects.
We hope you will join us in discussing Nature-based climate solutions (NbS) on the airwaves in the upcoming months. These are approaches that benefit both communities and the local environment, resulting in more resilience in the face of climate change.
We have been discussing this topic during our four-week online discussion, and have several backgrounder documents so you can learn more about NbS and some related practices.
- Nature-based Solutions
- Gender-responsive Nature-based Solutions
- Biodiversity
- Community forest management
We have also produced several radio scripts and Barza Wire stories on specific NbS practices that have had good results for communities across Africa. Use these stories to share best practices with your listeners, and discuss whether they have tried these approaches, what challenges they have faced, and what benefits exist for rural people and their local environment. Find resources on:
- Reforestation and agroforestry
- Wetlands, mangroves, and watercourses
- Even more Nature-based Solutions
You can find many scripts and stories on our websites.
We encourage you to develop a series of episodes to explore what Nature-based Solutions are, why they are important, and how rural people can implement these practices for their own benefit and the benefit of the environment. We have put together some design documents to suggest how you might plan these episodes.
If you have developed an episode related to Nature-based Solutions, please tell us! We will be offering 20 prizes of up to $200 CA for those who have participated in this campaign. (Those who have produced one episode will be eligible for a $50 CA prize, and those who have produced 4+ episodes will be eligible for a $200 CA prize. Prizes will be determined by random draw.) The deadline to indicate your participation is March 30, 2025. Tell us you have broadcast an episode by filling out this form: https://forms.gle/
We hope you will join us in exploring how communities can be more resilient to climate change.
