Raising awareness on family farming in the Africa Region

The Global Action Plan of the UN Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF 2019-2028), recognizes communication as a driver to advance family farming. Within this framework, YenKasa Africa a regional communication initiative promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Farm Radio International, the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC), Digital Green, The Pan-African Farmers’ Organization (PAFO), La
Via Campesina (LVC), Plateforme Regionale Des Organisations Paysannes d’Afrique Centrale (PROPAC), Réseau des organisations paysannes et de producteurs de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (ROPPA), carries out radio awareness raising activities associated to the UNDFF to amplify the voices of family farmers across Africa.

The YenKasa Africa Radio Initiative, ‘Family farming at the heart of sustainable food systems’, will be implemented throughout 2022 to support UNDFF activities in selected countries of the region, and will be carried out at 2 levels: a) to raise awareness on the role of family farming in sustainable food systems and to inform about the progress made at the policy, institutional and field level; and b) to share information about relevant issues related to family farming and the priorities of farmers organizations.

A radio initiative to advance family farming

The YenKasa Africa radio initiative, will raise awareness at the local and national level on the contribution of family farming to sustainable food systems giving voice to family farmers. It will also promote collaboration between rural/community radios, farmer organizations, rural institutions and projects to support family farming organizations according to their priorities. The process for producing and sharing radio products will follow a participatory path. In particular, selected radio stations in 6 countries will produce and share series of locally relevant radio programmes on family farming. The series will comprise 5 episodes per country (out of which 4 in local languages and one final in English or French) to be aired and re-broadcasted by local stations or networks in each country. In parallel, 5 radio programmes in English or French will be produced with a regional perspective. To facilitate the sharing and the engagement of the family farmer organizations, radio magazines will be produced in local languages. The dissemination will also be done using podcasts through online and social media channels, in order to reach out a wider segment of the audience as well as for use in face to face sessions.

The YenKasa Africa Radio Initiative will consider activities in countries that are in the process of developing or have approved National Action Plans for Family Farming and in support of family farmer organizations actively engaged in adopting communication and radio activities to support their members. Countries that have been identified are: Togo, Madagascar, Tanzania, Ghana, Zambia and Kenya. Others may join according to interest and availability of resources.
The programmes will also serve to share the UNDFF experiences across the region.
