The FAO Regional Office for Africa is actively promoting the adoption of digital agriculture across sub-Saharan countries. This effort is supported by a guiding framework developed in partnership with Wageningen University and Research (WUR). The study conducted aimed to analyze project interventions focusing on digital agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa, assess the impact of digital solutions on crop production, risk reduction, and value chain profitability, and provide recommendations for better adoption of impactful digital solutions.
Key findings reveal that most projects identified were “mid-level” digital projects, with significant focus on crop production and livestock sectors. Eastern Africa had the highest implementation of digital agriculture activities, followed by Western Africa, while Central and Southern Africa had lower representation. The study also highlighted priorities such as crop production and protection systems, trade and market opportunities, and resilience to natural disasters. Additionally, it noted the preference for simpler digital technologies like mobile applications and SMS services, suggesting a need for more advanced solutions and innovation promotion in FAO projects.
