Reinventing agropastoralism: Breeder-fattening livestock farming, a light in the climatic darkness of Liptako-Gourma

Start a dialogue!

In a context of climate change and increasing economic challenges, the cross-border area of Liptako-Gourma, shared between Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, finds itself at a crossroads. Facing these challenges, the Breeder-Fattening Livestock Farming (French: Élevage Naisseur Couplé à l’Embouche – ENCEM) emerges as an innovative solution, offering households in this region a sustainable path to improve their climate resilience. The ENCEM initiative, driven by the Federation of Unions of Peasant Groups of Niger (FUGPN-Mooriben), combines traditional livestock farming with modern techniques to maximize animal production while minimizing environmental impacts. This holistic approach not only strengthens food security; it also promotes gender equality by actively involving women and youth in all aspects of livestock farming and agricultural management.

The results of this initiative are compelling. Between 2016 and 2021, ENCEM not only increased the livestock and diversified agricultural activities but also contributed to a significant improvement in the quality of life of the beneficiaries. These successes are the fruit of close collaboration between farmers, livestock breeders, local organizations, and development partners.

Despite certain challenges, such as animal diseases and the need for ongoing training, the ENCEM experience remains an exemplary model. It illustrates how the combination of innovation, strong partnerships, and a gender-sensitive approach can sustainably transform agropastoral systems.

In conclusion, as 2023 comes to an end, we close this inspiring chapter with the promise of an even more promising future. The ENCEM experience reminds us that, even in the face of the most daunting challenges, innovation, community engagement, and a gender-sensitive approach can create miracles. Let’s turn to 2024 with optimism, ready to welcome new ideas and successes that will redefine the boundaries of agropastoralism.
